Thanks Everyone!

I want to sincerely thank everyone who came out and visited our booth at Phoenix Comicon. My wife and I had a great time meeting everyone. (Thanks Matt and Teresa!)

I absolutely could not have pulled off everything without the help of Adrian, Kirk, Jenny and Larissa. Thanks so much you guys, can't wait till next year!

We received a bunch of questions at the con this year and I thought I would address a few general ones here.

When will the Iconica Boxed Set be released?

The plan is to release the boxed set at Red Hot Robot on June 19th. So far, everything is going according to plan! The boxed set will feature the complete Prelude Series. Each card in the series will still be available individually.

When will I be able to purchase the Cipher and Paragon on your Etsy Shop?

I'll offer these on my Etsy Shop sometime during the week of June 1st. (I thought I would have those posted today, but I need a little down time from the Con with my family.)

Will you be selling prints on your Etsy Shop?

Yes. I'll be adding prints to my Etsy site shortly, as in the next several days.

As for the next few days, I have unpacking from the Con to do, Etsy orders to ship and organizing to do for our upcoming show on Saturday the 19th.

Phoenix Comicon 2010

Phoenix Comicon 2010 has arrived and I'm looking forward to another fun event, meeting new people, artists and friends of Rynaga.  I hope you'll plan on stopping by for a visit.

The World of Rynaga table will be located in the Small Press area again this year. I'll have books, prints and Iconica game sets on hand. I'll also be releasing two new Iconica cards and limited edition prints.

See you there!

Announcing Iconica Series Two

I wanted to take a few moments to outline my plans for Iconica Series Two, which will be called the Sanctum Series.

Wrapping up the Prelude Series

The first series of Iconica game cards was named after my first book, Prelude. This is because several of the characters in this series are referred to in my book. The book also served as an introduction to the World of Rynaga, while Iconica was created to be a way for players to experience the people and places of this world while having a social experience.

The Iconica Prelude Series is due to wrap up this summer with a new Sentinel and two Special character types: the Brew Master and a mystery character that's not being announced just yet.

In the end this series will have 22 cards in all. It's completion will mark a milestone in the Rynaga project and I'll be celebrating by offering a boxed set which will include ALL of the cards in series one. Heck, I'll probably raise a pint or two in celebration as well!

Setting the stage for Series Two

As is outlined in the rules for Iconica, the Sarion are an antagonist race on Rynaga. They're busy working on a project they call Legion. The details of this project are not fully known, however, evidence concerning the purpose of the Legion initiative points to a sinister plot.

In view of this, a large group of Sarion citizens turn against their own government. They forfeit their citizenship and vow never to support Sarion tyranny. Led by a group of courageous leaders, a mass exodus takes place and thousands of rebels leave Sarion held lands, seeking asylum with the Protectorate.

At first, the members of the Protectorate hesitate to welcome these rebel Sarion. They do not fully trust their motives. As a show of solidarity and rebirth as a people, the Sarion rebels name themselves Saraja, which means "a people remade." The Saraja eventually gain not only the support of the Protectorate peoples, but their respect as well.

After a long journey, the Saraja settle themselves and begin work on their first city, called Sanctum. From here, they begin living in harmony with the native races of Rynaga while defending those in need of protection, healing and respite from oppression.

Iconica Sanctum Series

Series Two will be characterized by several Sanctum characters and thus will be referred to as the Sanctum Series.

Some of the characters in this collection will include Knights, Dyads (not Dryads), Haladrons and Apothecarys. I'll have more information on these new characters later.

The important thing to note is this: Sanctum will be a new Faction. Yup. Instead of three factions, Protectorate, Legion and Independent, there will now be four. The Sanctum faction may be partnered with Protectorate or Independent characters, but not Legion characters. Again, more information will follow.

Full speed ahead

By Phoenix Comicon 2011, I'd like to be finishing the Sanctum series and preparing to start the third. I'm so thankful for all the support Iconica has received so far. My goal is to continue creating an enjoyable fantasy-themed, indie-gaming experience that exists in it's own category, set apart from the norm yet approachable.

As for the future, I've raised the anchor, opened the sails and I've got my hands on the helm. Iconica is sailing full speed ahead on open waters with a clear direction. I hope you'll continue the journey with me.

Iconica Game Night

I'm excited to announce the beginning of an ongoing series of Iconica gaming events, called Iconica Game Night. I'll be partnering with several local establishments around the valley to deliver what I hope to be a fun experience for us.

For those who may not know, Iconica is an indie card game featuring characters from the World of Rynaga, a fictional world of my own creation.

I had the privilege of being featured on Wired.com's GeekDad Blog. Take a look at this review of the game on Wired.com. Here's an interview I did as well for Wired.

"I can't overemphasize how impressed I am with the quality of the game, both the appearance and the actual gameplay."
-Jonathan Liu, GeekDad Blog/Wired.com

How Game Night Works
Meet me at the location announced. Grab a treat, take a seat and challenge me to a quick game of Iconica. (We'll each choose one character and face off against each other.) If you defeat me, you'll win a unique Iconica character card. If I win, that's when I practice my diabolical laugh: Muahahahahahhaha! It's all in good fun, and hey, you'll still win something for playing.

Are you game?

First Stop: Blueberry Deluxe

Jessica at Blueberry Deluxe Boutique is a friend I made through Etsy. Her shop features vintage clothing, art and accessories. She named her shop after her Pug Blueberry.

So here's the address:

Blueberry Deluxe
702 W. Montecito
Phoenix, AZ 85013
602.717.8376

I'll be there on Thursday, May 20, 2010 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. We'll have homemade treats on hand as well as cool summertime drinks. I'll have books, prints and Iconica game sets available too.

Over the coming days I'll be announcing new locations, dates and times. In the end, Iconica is really about bringing people together. I look forward to sharing some time with you. Thanks for your support!

Phoenix Comicon Preparations

The next several weeks will be full of preparations for this years Phoenix Comicon in downtown Phoenix. I'll have a small press booth (T16) and a setup similar to last years, with a few improvements. I'm a nut for keeping things clean and organized, so I'm looking for ways to maximize the space I have.

I'm also preparing some special products for visitors to our booth and I'll be announcing a special summertime agenda for World of Rynaga. So, watch for updates soon. Thanks.

Iconica Game Tip #2

Watch Your Tiles

During an Iconica game, it's important to observe what tile a character's damage marker lands on. If you're not paying attention, you're bound to miss an opportunity to prevent incoming damage, status effects, and other negative actions. Just one overlooked detail is enough to unravel your tactical approach to the game and can lead to disaster pretty quickly.

It's true, Iconica was created with layers of complexity. So you don't have to play the game using Strengths and Nullifiers to have fun. Yet, incorporating these elements into your game is really the only way to get the full Iconica experience.

Hey, you want to be prepared come tournament time right? I thought so.

New Iconica Character Releases

Ok, printer stuff is out of the way and I'm moving on! On or before Monday, April 19th at 7pm, the following three characters will be available from my Etsy Shop:
  1. Greystalk Vaygr Slayer
  2. Lunaen Masquer
  3. Drakhan Raider
  4. Araylian Pathfinder
These characters hail from the eastern regions of Veratar. All three of these characters are aligned with the Legion, which serves to balance out the available selection between Protectorate and Legion a bit more.

New Iconica Characters Delayed

Well, I was so excited to receive new Iconica characters from my printer today!

But alas, on my way to photograph the new characters, I discovered a production issue that is currently being resolved with my vendor and may result in reprints.

So, the new Iconica cards will suffer a slight delay in their release. I will keep everyone up to date. I have a great source for printing and I'm sure they will correct things quickly.

Preparing for Phoenix Comicon 2010

Well, I have lots of new Iconica characters at press and I'm waiting with great anticipation for them to be delivered. The next few weeks are going to be very busy for me.

I'm preparing for this years Phoenix Comicon. I'll have a table in the Indie-Publisher's section. Phoenix Comicon is really the only convention I've done so far. There are others around the country I'd like to get involved with, but I'll need to make some serious schedule adjustments to attend them. Regardless, Cons are a great time and it's inspiring to see so many creative people sharing their work and experiences.

I plan to arrive at this years Comicon with lots of new Iconica content, as well as some special "in-person" promotions. I'll keep you guys up to date during the next few weeks.

Ok, back to work. The Con is gonna come quick!

Iconica Game Tip #1

Choosing Your Party Members

Iconica is a strategy game. You do a fair of amount of planning and building of your collection. Some favor Offensive characters, while others favor Defensive characters.

Consequently, much of the strategy in Iconica is applied before you even play the game, specifically when you're choosing your party members.

As the rules point out, you and your opponent will take turns choosing characters to play. While this is happening, pay close attention to which characters your opponent is selecting. Choose your own characters based on which cards you believe will be effective against your opponents characters.

How does one know which characters will be effective? Get to know your characters. Once you know the characters, you can begin forming strategies for playing against them.

For instance, playing a Songsayer against an Assassin = not good for the Songsayer 9 times out of 10. However, the Songsayer does well against Defensive class characters.

So, get to know the characters you possess. If you don't own some of them, read their profiles online to find out more about them. After all, in life or in Iconica, knowledge is key.

Thanks Wired.com!

Amazing.

The past two weeks have been buzzing with questions, orders, and interest over Iconica. I want to sincerely express my gratitude to Jonathan Liu for such a favorable review of Iconica. (I'm finally a GeekDad! My wife always knew though.)

Developing Iconica is one of the most fun and satisfying projects I work on as a creative. Its progress is supported by players who love the indie-gaming experience and want to spend time exploring content with soul.

While I maintain a clear vision for Iconica's growth, I welcome suggestions and feedback from the gaming community. In fact, one upcoming character - the Brew Master - is based on a recommendation offered up by an Iconica player! It was a great suggestion because it fit into the lore and culture of Rynaga. I can't wait to share more about how this character was created.

I'm thankful for all of the questions, accolades, and support I've been receiving. Just know this is only the beginning!

Preview - New Iconica Cards

I'm getting ready to release three new Iconica cards so I thought I'd post a preview featuring the new characters. This post may answer some of your initial questions about the cards, but be sure to email me if you have more questions. These three cards are due for release this April.

Description

Masquers are celebrated performers of Sarion lore. Often found traveling with theatrical productions, the Masquer is a passionate story-teller, exquisite dancer and skilled acrobat. Masquers have a talent for mesmerizing their audiences, leaving onlookers in a state of wonderment that is not easily broken.

Skills

The Lunaen Masquer possesses Clarity and Evasion, making her resistant to Blind and Stun. She also has a Parry tile for blocking damage and a Reaction tile that deals 10 damage back to any attacker. While she is a Disruptive Class character, she is capable of healing herself to a small degree.

Action Style

Look for this Masquer to deal out lots of Status Effects, primarily Confusion. She also has the ability to use Actions from opposing characters. If you want a character that will complicate your opponents decisions, she's the one.

Description

Raiders work on the fringe of Sarion lands. Much of their time is spent harassing traveling merchants in search of valuable goods and resources to loot. They abduct dignitaries, politicians and members of royalty whenever they can. Raiders are in the business of holding others for ransom and business is booming.

Skills

Raiders are masters of Evasion. In fact seven of their 17 Health Meter tiles are geared towards avoiding Stun. In addition, Raiders have a Reaction damage potential of 50 points.

Action Style

The Drakhan Raider is well-suited to dealing out damage and has an ability that removes negative status effects from his allies. He also has an Action called "Ransom" which prevents three opposing characters from using any #6 Actions until they roll doubles.

Description

The misty region known as Greystalk is home to a high concentration of Vaygr; powerful, intelligent, and carnivorous beasts that consistently threaten Sarion citizens. Hunters of this realm specialize in suppressing the Vaygr threat. Without Slayers, Sarion towns would be overrun with these beasts.

Skills

The Vaygr Slayer is a survivor. He has a good amount of health and uses Parry tiles to block incoming damage. He also carries an herb called Lilander with him, which comes in handy for healing.

Action Style

The more damage this Slayer receives, the more damage he is capable of delivering. His Actions are geared towards endurance and adaptability throughout all stages of the game. He may not deal great amounts of damage early on, but he's a great game closer.

I'm excited about these new cards and I can't wait to share more with you in the coming weeks.

Finding Inspiration

Like most people I have a day job.

I'm a graphic designer for an in-house marketing team here in Phoenix. Most of my work is pretty straight forward. It's corporate work with corporate clients. Many times it can be cut and dry.

So, I've written up ideas I try to remind myself of when I need inspiration. Maybe one or two might spark an idea for you.

Play - Explore new directions for the brand or products you're representing, even if they are just concepts. Experiment with new colors, type treatments and patterns. Think of possible messages and strategies. Make note of the business reasons for your ideas, you never know when they may come in handy.

Volunteer - Start doing something with a professional organization such as AIGA. Volunteer your time or donate work to a cause that benefits students or those in need.

Teach something - Help someone who needs assistance in your field of study. Perhaps you have a relative or know a student that might have questions about your line of work. Be there for them. Educate your clients and team members as well. Offer guidance in a sincere, non-egotistical manner.

Learn something - Being a life-learner is vital to finding satisfaction both in our careers and personal lives. Take a class, start a new DIY project or perfect a signature dish.

Read something - Not everyone loves reading, but reading can open up TONS of opportunities. Whether it's books or blogs, seek out expert advice that can help you grow. Read, read, read. (Just remember to watch who you're taking advice from.)

Freelance - Unless it's completely against your employers policies, take on a freelance job once and a while. Not only can this provide you with more experience, you have the opportunity to be more selective about the work you take on. (Just don't forget the tax man!)

Get Out of the Office
- If at all possible, change your work environment on occasion. We innovate by looking at the world differently, not behaving like corporate robots! Right? My employers understand this and it has helped me many times when faced with a challenging creative problem. It's amazing how adjusting ones work environment can lead to breakthroughs.

Embrace the Cube - If you have to work in a cubicle, make it as lively as possible. Hang your art, color swatches, posters, anything that will inspire you. Turn your cubicle into a space that represents your vision, goals and persona. Build a library of magazines and books at your desk. Be a resource for others.

Do Good - No matter what, don't sacrifice your personal values. Be determined to see every project succeed, no matter if it's for yourself, your boss or your clients. Be kind to others, but don't compromise high standards. Be firm, but respectful when disagreements arise. Collaborate, yet advocate for what is best for the brand and your client, not yourself. All of this will increase your sense of satisfaction in your work.

Love - It's an emotional word, but that's the point. Show others that you love what you do. If you have a talent or a skill, let it be known and help others. I believe that success born from pure motives is the most satisfactory. (That's why we run into people these days who have lots of money, but aren't happy. It's something to remind ourselves of.)

Don't expect rainbows and butterflies all the time. Office politics, tough customers, tight deadlines and stress will more than likely continue. The bottom line is that success comes with time and only if you work at seeking out and holding on to what inspires you personally.

Iconica Update

Ok, the Iconica 2-Player Starter set is available on my store now. Next is to get all of the individual Iconica cards up on Etsy as well.

I've had some questions lately about Iconica:
  1. "Are you still creating cards?" - Yes, definitely. The Iconica project has only just begun. Being an indie creator gives me great control over my content, yet sometimes this means longer development times. I'm trying to be smart about which cards are released and when. This has an impact on game balancing.
  2. "When can we expect new cards?" - Three new cards will be released within the next 60 days. I'll give you a preview on my blog here very shortly.
  3. "How many cards are there in the first series of Iconica cards?" - The first series of Iconica cards, called "Prelude," just like my book, contains 21 cards in all. This series will wrap up at Phoenix Comicon in May. There might be some other Iconica surprises at the Con, so save the date if you can!
Here's some more Iconica game images. Let me know if you have more questions!

Product Photography

It's not easy, but the results can really raise the profile and charisma of your work. I'm spending the day taking lots of product shots of the Iconica game and game pieces as well.

Admittedly this is something I should have done a while ago. Whatever, I'm doing it now, right?!

Take a look at some more photos of Prelude.

Etsy Shop

Today and tomorrow I'll be working on getting my Etsy shop up and running. Books, prints and cards for the game I've created called Iconica.

Why Etsy? All of my products are made by me. (I do everything except run the printing press.) It's secure, easy to use and most of all - I don't have to code/edit shopping cart code! Etsy makes it easy to incorporate Google Analytics too.

Ultimately, I need to my spend time writing, illustrating and designing. I need to focus on creating new content. Even though I'm currently expanding more of my CSS, HTML and XHTML knowledge, I can't afford to get heavily involved in coding.

There are some cool WordPress shopping carts out there, but they're just not easy for me to incorporate into the kind of Website experience I want to offer visitors.

Well, time for me to get crackin!

Now That Star Has Passed

We were two vibrant stars with an hours time,
revolving towards a moment with fate.
We were holding our hopes high in our prime,
held down by no force that earth could create.

Our children grew wild as beautiful weeds,
making their roots in the folds between us.
Our years together passed as white light speeds,
from mornings birth to nights asleep in dust.

You gave me your youth and placed me ahead,
all too soon came our fragile golden years.
You were less my Star and the sun instead,
when the fog-filled days of my mind appeared.

We spent our lives as a mist in the glade.
I sit here alone, I'll not be afraid.

I've been writing poetry in sonnet form for some time now. I woke up with this sonnet running around in my head today. If I can catch it and make it presentable, I'll post it today.

Finding Your Way on Rynaga

Early in the creation of the Rynaga project, I knew it would be much easier to tell stories if I created maps. I mean, I guess it's not necessary, but it sure makes things seem more real.

As a child, I remember reading books like the Lord of the Rings and Wizard of Oz during summer months. The best part about these stories were the maps. I was actually able to follow a story from beginning to end and get a sense for the length of a journey.

So, if you're interested in hiking across Rynaga, make sure you don't get caught without a map. The locations on these maps are featured in the books and games I create. They'll also serve as reference points for future projects I'm developing.

World of Rynaga Website

So I've been learning tons more about CSS, which has confirmed how much I don't know about the new ways of writing HTML. Onward and upward.

Today is all about organizing myself to start "operating" on my Website over at rynaga.com. This blog will keep you guys up to date on how things are going with that. (Blogger is so easy to use. I should have done this much sooner.)

I plan to set up a store on Etsy as well. Look for that very shortly, as in the next several days. Just need to take some photos.

I'm Climbing the CSS Mountain

Today I'm taking some CSS tutorials on Lynda.com. I cut my teeth on print work, but having mastered that for the most part, I'm really trying to brush up on my knowledge of CSS and HTML.

While my heart is in illustration and writing, keeping up with HTML and CSS is vital to my success as a designer. If I want to create great things interactively, I have to make sure I'm in control of the code.
